National Council of Catholic Women - San Antonio Province records
Scope and Contents
The records of the San Antonio Province of the National Council of Catholic Women contain correspondence, financial records, photographs, history of the province, and records of individual diocesan chapters.
The largest component of the records is those created by each San Antonio Province Director during her two-year term. These records include correspondence, financial records, minutes, reports, secretarial records, and the occasional Province Director biography. After 1996 the Province Directors also bound together some of their records to reflect the work of their term in office. These binders are left intact to adequately reflect the intent of the Province Director. It should be noted that some Province Directors created documents at either the diocesan or national level before or after their term in office. These records are arranged in accordance with the position in which they were created.
The remaining records created by the San Antonio Province fall into two categories: Administrative and historical. The administrative records include rules and bylaws, proposed and accepted amendments to those bylaws, position descriptions for the various officers, the Province Mission Statements, membership directors, and financial records. The historical records include meeting and conference programs, as well as San Antonio Province Scrapbooks.
As a functioning unit of the National Council of Catholic Women, the San Antonio Province received and retained a large amount of material that was created by the national office. The yearly Province Director Reports make up the largest portion of this material, these reports are from the province chapters nationwide. They were compiled at the National Province Director meetings and reported on the work done by each province from the previous year. The remainder of this material is made up of correspondence, executive body reports, rules, job descriptions, press releases, committee member lists, legislative information, and printed materials. An undated autobiography of Gloria Sanchez - third vice-president from 1985 to 1987 and leadership trainer from 1987 to 1991 - is also included.

Historical Note
The San Antonio Province of the National Council of Catholic Women was formed in 1926. Reflecting the goals of the national organization, the San Antonio Province is a service organization that seeks to empower Catholic women for charitable, educational, and spiritual work in their communities. The organization also serves as a forum for Catholic women to develop leadership and management skills, to discuss current issues in the Church, and to influence public policy through application of the Church's teachings at the local and national levels. The San Antonio Province covers all the diocesan chapters for the state of Texas.
The San Antonio Province is active at the local level in organizing respite care for the elderly and at the national and international levels in raising money for the hungry. In the political arena, the San Antonio Province lobbies for reducing the debt owed by developing nations to the first world nations. The organization also lobbies for pro-life legislation and to provide for alternatives to abortion.
The San Antonio Province is made up of fourteen diocesan chapters, which participate at the province level to varying degrees. The Province Director, who serves a two-year term, leads the province. When a new Province Director is elected the headquarters of the San Antonio Province then moves to that Province Director’s diocese. This entails the migration of a part of the province's records to another city every two years.
Each diocesan chapter of the San Antonio Province schedules its own meetings. The chapter then meets once during the year at the annual meeting of the San Antonio Province. Also, once a year the Province Director meets with other Province Directors from around the country under the auspices of the National Council of Catholic Women.
